Object: Ancient Greek bronze bowl from the archaic epoch

Material: Bronze

Date: About 6th century BC
Ancient Greece, archaic period

Description: Oval bowl made out of massive bronze. Flattened base, prominent edge below the lip. Worth noting is a sophisticated ancient repairing close to the lip, impressively underlining the high value such bronze objects had in ancient times.
The object was examined at the Curt-Engelhorn Archeometry Centrum of Prof. Pernicka in 2012. The alloy, however, did not reveal any anomalies which would allow a geographic attribution. The collector from whom this item was acquired had in his collection listet the item as an ancient Greek helmet. Although this attribution cannot be excluded, it does, however, appear as less probable to us.

Size: 27,5cm x 24,5cm x 10,5cm.

Condition: Overall great condition. Interesting riveted repairing at lip which was done in ancient times. Few modern scratches at in- and outside, cleaned with remains of patina.

References: Compare Bonhams, Auction 20021, Lot 76.

Provenance: Acquired 2011 in a German auction house. In this from a private collection.
