Henry H.
Gorringe:
Henry Honychurch Gorringe was a United States naval officer. In 1875, he discovered the underwater mountain range now known as the Gorringe Sea Bank. Later (1876 - 1878) he served in the Mediterranean. But it was his successful planning and completion of moving the 21 meter high obelisk of Thutmose III with a weight of 200 tons from Alexandria in Egypt to Central Park in New York City which brought him national acclaim. The monument, nowadays known as Cleopatra's Needle, is still one of the highlights of Central Park in NYC. Another remarkable fact about Henry Gorringe is that one of his friends was Theodore Roosevelt, who later served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909.
