Object: Painted tripod ceramic vessel

Material: Ceramic, painted in reddish-brown and black.

Period: Western Iran or Luristan,
Middle Bronze Age,
C. 2000 BC to 1500 BC.

Description:    The large ceramic vessel has a cylindrical shape with a waist. It rests on three slender foots. The outer surface is decorated by four reddish-brown bands, in between black cross-hatched rhomboid chequers. Also the tripod-feet are decorated by horizontal lines in brown or black paint.
Imposing piece of ceramic because of its good preservation for its size and especially because of the still vibrant colours of the paint. It belongs to the so-called "Khabur ware" pottery and was popular in Northern Mesopotamia during the first half of the 2nd Millenium BC.

Dimensions: 19,6cm height, 17,3cm diameter.

Condition: Restored from several fragments. Some small pieces missing, each not larger than 20mm. Remarkably well-preserved polychrome paint. Nice overall condition for a vessel of this size. Old sticker at the bottom reading "36B CPGS".

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2017 from the private posession of M. Voos, Germany. Inherited by M. Voos from the Germany private collection H. Herbst. Acquired approx. 1976 at Davies Antiques, London for the Herbst collection and brought to Germany (a copy of the original invoice is available).
