Object: Near Eastern stamp seal with geometrical decoration

Material: Stone with white, grey and blue colours. Marks of intense heat.

Period: 6th cent. BC to 5th cent. BC.
Neo-Babylonian or Achaemenid.

Description:    Conoid seal with geometrical stamp. Drill hole at the upper side that could be used to string the piece.

Dimensions: 27mm height, 18mm length, 10mm width.

Condition: Small chip at the drill hole. Otherwise perfect preservation. The seal was probably in a fire in ancient times, the heat altered the stone.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2014 from a German auction house. Previously in the important collection of the notary Dr. Paul Gerhard Langenkamp (1922–2012) from Duesseldorf, Germany. Acquired into his collection from the European art market between the 1940s and 1980s. Many pieces from his collection has been bought at the art specialists Drouot Paris, Palais d’Orsay, Münzen und Medaillen AG Basel and Frank Sternberg AG Zürich.
