Object: Cypriot bichrome ware dish

Material: Beige pottery with dark slip, dark red and dark brown paint.

Period: 1050 BC to 750 BC,
Cypro-Geometric.
Iron Age.

Description:    Shallow dish or bowl with flat underside and two handles with pointy ends at oposing sides. The bottom side is painted in dark red and dark brown with a geometric decoration. The inside is painted in dark brown with concentric circles. The outer surface is accentuated in dark brown. This type of pottery from Cyprus is well known to archaeologists and belongs to the so-called Bichrome ware.

Dimensions: 37.0cm diameter with handles, 27.6cm diameter without handles. Approx. 5.6cm height.

Condition: Museum condition. Apart from minor chips fully intact. The polychrome paint is preserved well. Comes with an old sticker from Davies Antiques reading "Cyprus 7th C. BC".

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2017 from the private posession of M. Voos, Germany. Inherited by M. Voos from the Germany private collection H. Herbst. Acquired c. 1976 at Davies Antiques, London for the Herbst collection and brought to Germany (a copy of the original invoice is available).
