Object: Cypriot bichrome ware dish

Material: Beige pottery with red and brown paint.

Period: 1050 BC to 750 BC,
Cypro-Geometric.
Iron Age.

Description:    Shallow dish or bowl with flat underside and two handles with pointy ends at oposing sides. The bottom side is painted in red and brown with a geometric decoration. The inside is painted in brown with concentric circles. The handles are accentuated by brown paint. This type of pottery from Cyprus is well known to archaeologists and belongs to the so-called Bichrome ware.

Dimensions: 31.7cm diameter with handles, 23.5cm diameter without handles. Approx. 4cm height.

Condition: Restored from several fragments. Approx. 2cm of the rim remodeled and 7cm missing. The bichrome paint is still very well preserved. This makes the dish an attrative example of Cypriot geometric pottery.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2018 on the British art market. Previously in the collection of D. Read. Acquired into the collection between 1966 and 1969.
