Object: Egyptian cartonnage mummy mask

Material: Cartonnage, probably with linen. White ground with polychrome painting.

Period: End of the ptolemaic period to beginning of the Roman period of ancient Egypt.
1st century BC.

Description:    Mummy mask made of cartonnage. Plastically modeled face with wig. The front is completely colored. Hollow on the back with a negative shape of the face.
The mask is very decorative and nonetheless available for a small budget due to its relatively small format, as well as the restoration and overpainting.

Dimensions: 24.1cm height, 15.1cm width, 8cm depth.

Condition: Professionally restored, reinforced on the back, edges smoothed. Reconstructions and overpaintings on the front. The mask can stand erect with an enclosed metal bracket. Modern inscription from a previous owner on the back.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2021 on the German art market. Previously in the German private collection of Helge Deikner (1926-2021). Acquired into the collection in the 1970s or earlier.
