Object: Early Byzantine censer with handle

Material: Bronze.

Period: 500 AD to 700 AD.
Towards the end of the Early Byzantine period.

Description:    Small pot with a bulbous body, a tapered, high base and an outward-pointing rim. There are two loops set on top of the rim, into which an U-shaped stirrup handle is hung from the inside. Another flat wide loop is riveted to the apex of the handle, with which the vessel could once be hung and swung.
It is an early Byzantine censer, probably an incense burner.

Dimensions: 6.6cm high without handle. 15cm high with handle.

Condition: Almost perfect condition. Small dent on the body, edge around the base slightly bent in places and torn in one place. However, this does not diminish the overall impression in any way.

Provenance: Acquired at a German auction house in 2021. Previously in the German private collection G. Hauck. Acquired in 2002 from the former collection of viniculture historian Friedrich von Bassermann-Jordan (1872-1959) located in Germany.
