Condition: |
Head broken and re-attached. Small parts of head and cloth missing. Fragments of base plate re-attached. White grounding widely preserved. Exceptionally well preserved polychrome painting and surface details. With collector's note "Canosa - Statuette - Terracotta 340 a. Chr.". Two small holes for TL analysis (not shown on the pictures).

Compare an almost identical figure in the British Museum with Museum Number 1836,0224.436. A similar figurine was sold at Christie's New York in 2017 for over 10,000 USD. |
TL certificate: |
A thermoluminescence analysis performed in August 2020 has confirmed the age of the figurine to be 2200 years (+/- 13%), which perfectly matches with the dating based on the style.

Acquired 2020 from the German private collection Dr. R. Schmidt. Acquired by his father, Dr. Diethelm Schmidt, in the early 1980s from a Cologne (Germany) art gallery.
