Object: Luristan pendant shaped as a standing ibex

Material: Massive cast bronze.

Period: End of 2nd Millenium BC to first quarter of 1st Millenium BC.
Iron Age of Luristan.

Description:    Massive pendant from Luristan in the shape of a standing ibex with curved horns. The flat body is not articulated, the legs are plastically set apart from the thighs. The large head with horns sits on a long neck. A loop on the back allowed to use the figure as a pendant.

Background: The province of Luristan on the western Persian border is known for its masterful ancient metalwork. Artefacts from this region first reached European museums in the middle of the 19th century. However, it was only at the beginning of the 20th century that the origin of these artefacts could be fully reconstructed. Since then, the artistic and exotic objects have enjoyed great popularity with museums and private collectors. Bronze weapons and jewellery make up the bulk of these collections. This is related to the burial tradition of the time. Even the simpler tombs of Luristan were furnished with bronze weapons or jewellery. On the other hand, ceramics, tools and the like were purely household and not votive objects.

Dimensions: 35mm high, 27mm long.

Condition: Very good condition. Fully preserved and beautifully patinated.

Provenance: Acquired by us on the German art market in 2020. Previously in the Theo Lau collection, which has been in Germany since 1978.
