Object: Neo-Assyrian stamp seal

Material: Black stone.

Period: 8th cent. BC to 7th cent. BC.
Neo-Assyrian.

Description:    Conoid stamp seal with octagonal edges. A drill hole at the upper side of the seal could be used to string the piece. The seal image is not complete because of a damage to the stamp, but it probably shows two mythological hybrid creatures flanking a tree of life with a winged sun above the scene.

Dimensions: 25mm height, 20mm length, 16mm width.

Condition: Chip to the stamp side, otherwise good condition with only minor chips.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2014 from a German auction house. Previously in the important collection of the notary Dr. Paul Gerhard Langenkamp (1922–2012) from Duesseldorf, Germany. Acquired into his collection from the European art market between the 1940s and 1980s. Many pieces from his collection has been bought at the art specialists Drouot Paris, Palais d’Orsay, Münzen und Medaillen AG Basel and Frank Sternberg AG Zürich.
