Object: Pair of Roman gold earrings

Material: Bodies made of gold, set with gems made of onyx.

Period: C. 2nd century AD.
Roman Imperial Period.

Description:    Two Roman gold earrings, presumably a pair that belonged together. The body has the shape of an oval bowl with brackets soldered onto the back. A cameo made of black and white layered onyx is set in each earring. The stones show a female and a male bust in profile. There was probably once an ornate collar with pendants around the frame, which is now missing.
A comparative piece made in very similar style is shown in Ruseva-Slokoska's catalog (No. 50). It comes from Silistra in Bulgaria. Also the piece No. 51 of comparable design comes from Suchindol in Bulgaria. The earrings presented here can therefore be assumed to have been made in the Danube provinces of the Roman Empire.

Dimensions: Both earrings with a "bowl" of approx. 11mm height and 9mm width. 17mm and 23mm depth, respectively, including brackets and cameo.

Condition: Outstanding condition. Fully intact, only minor deformations which do not disturb the overall impression.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2020 on the US American art market. Previously in the Belgium collection of Frances Artuner. Acquired into the collection in the 1960ies. The place of origin must be located in the Danube provinces of the Roman Empire.
