Reused amphora

Amphoras were very typical transport vessels in antiquity. But this piece is special, because it has obviously been reused after its time as an amphora. An oval opening has been cut into a side wall. We suspect the object was subsequently used as a basin, for example to wash in it.

Ancient art from Western Asia, Egypt and Rome

We added numerous ancient artefacts to the online gallery during the last days. Pieces we found particularly stunning include a zoomorphic vessel from Iron Age Iran, the central part of a mummy cartonnage depicting the four sons of Horus and Kheper-Ra, as well as a Roman ribbed glass bowl made of beautiful aubergine glass. Have a look and enjoy.

Luristan bronze pin with a seven-pointed star

This pin is decorated with a seven-pointed star - but it has nothing to do with Game of Thrones. It is rather a very distinct type for Iron Age Luristan in what is today Iran. The highly developed bronze works of Luristan form a unique fusion between the art of the Near Eastern civilizations and the nomadic peoples living in the wide open spaces of the steppe.
This particular pin design with a large decorated head evolved in no other culture. It is a distinguishing Luristan type of artefact.

Greek vases have just been added to our online shop

Vases from Classical Antiquity are sought-after objects for collections of ancient art. We are happy to present four interesting vessels of this type. Two of them are bell craters from South Italy, one of which can be attributed to the Nicholson painter and is published twice. In addition, you will find an Etruscan urn and a rare precursor of a bell krater dating to the early Orientalizing period of Ancient Greece.
