Object: Egyptian predynastic redware jar

Material: Pottery with red glaze and remains of black glaze at the rim.

Period: Predynastic period of Egypt,
Naqada I,
circa 4000 BC to 3500 BC.

Description:    Simple hand-formed pottery vessel of timeless elegance. The slender almost cylindrical body tapers towards the rimless lip. Pointed base. The outer surface has a red glaze that is mostly intact, remains of a black glaze can still be seen at the rim.

Dimensions: 15.1cm height, circa 6.2cm diameter.

Condition: Very good condition, apart from small chips fully intact including large parts of the original glaze. Stable crack at the lip. Old collection sticker imprinted "1" on the outer surface.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2020 on the US-American art market. Previously in the US-American Raleigh family collection Acquired into the collection in the mid 1950ies from a British curator in London.
