Object: Painted bowl of the Ica culture

Material: Pottery with polychrome paintings in light brown, red-brown, black and orange.

Period: Ica culture,
around 1000 AD.

Description:    Wide bowl with round base and steep walls. Light brown monochrome painting at the bottom. The rest is painted in five different zones. Each zone has a geometrical ornamentation. The geometrical patterns and the background are held in light brown, red-brown, black and orange.

Dimensions: 108mm diameter, 75mm height.

Condition: Very good condition. Vessel fully intact. Only minor chips at the lip. The original paint is perfectly preserved, nearly no wear at all. Slight surface patination. Modern inscription "15" by Helene Ferro with black ink on the bottom side, hard to decipher.

Provenance: Acquired in 2018 on the German art market. Previously in the German private collection of Helene Ferro, collection no. 19. Helen Ferro undertook adventurous travels to South America and spent a long time there. She explored the art and culture of the continent and acquired numerous artefacts of the precolumbian civilizations between 1945 and 1967. Before 1968 all objects have been exported from South America to Germany. This vessel is mentioned in a note by Ms Ferro, she bought it from Mr Gerd Glaessner, who acquired the piece in Lima, Peru.
