Description: |
Red-figure bell krater. Large vase used for watering down wine in Ancient Greece. The shape, resembling a bell turned upside down, developed in the 5th century BC. One side shows a woman rushing to the left and turning around, looking into a mirror which she holds in her right hand. She has thoroughly dressed hair ("Melonenfrisur") and wears a diadem made from white plates. The woman wears a girded chiton and rich jewelry (pearl necklace and bracelets). The left arm holds a wreath. From the right, she is approached by a naked Satyr wearing a wreath on his head. The second side shows a cloaked youth standing to the right, holding a wreath in his right hand, and his cloak with the left, and looking onto a large bowl held by a second cloaked youth. Below the scenes a broad meander ribbon, protruding palmettes below the handles. Under the lip laurel wreath. |
