Object: Iron Age juglet

Material: Terra cotta with black slip.

Period: Iron Age II,
1000 BC to 586 BC.
This is the historically well-known period framed by King Solomon building the First Temple in Jerusalem and its destruction by Nebuchadnezzar after conquering the city.

Description:    Small juglet from the Holy Land. Spherical body with slim neck and handle. The clay body is covered by a black slip.

Background: The black slip is typical for the so-called black ware from the Iron Age II period. This type of vessel was mostly made of dark clay. A slip was applied which turned black when the clay was baked in the oven. Because of this technique the surface of the juglet is today well-preserved. You can still feel the smoothness of it holding the piece in your hands.

Dimensions: 90mm height, 59mm diameter.

Condition: Perfect condition. The black slip is fully intact apart from minor chips.

Provenance: Acquired in 2018 from R. Deutsch, Israel. Exported from Israel with permit from the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA). Previously in the famous collection of judge Dr. Steve Adler. He bought his collection approx. between 1975 and 2015 from licensed antiquities dealers in Jerusalem, mainly from Ronnie Firer.
