Description:    Red-figure bell krater. Large vase used for watering down wine in Ancient Greece. The shape, resembling a bell turned upside down, developed in the 5th century BC.
One side shows a young warrior sitting on a rock, wearing a white and yellow colored armor and leg pieces. The warrior has placed his left arm on a shield and holds a spear in the right. Facing him is a woman wearing a long robe and taenia and carrying a phiale (see also the Toronto krater, A. D. Trendall, The red-figured vases of Lucania, Campania and Sicily (Oxford 1967) Pl. 205,3).
The other side shows two cloaked youths.
Below the two scenes a "laufender Hund" ribbon, protruding palmettes below the handles. Laurel wreath under the lip.

The attribution to the Nicholson painter is given through the first scene, the style of the depiction of the cloaked youths and the non-painted areas above the handles with an interrupted laurel wreath.

Size: Height 39.5 cm, diameter 40 cm

Condition: Extremely well preserved. No damages / cracks, painting in very good condition with minimal wear.
