BASILEAE IN OFFICINA FROBENIANA
ANNO M D XLIIII.
Hieronymus Froben, Basel, 1544

Format: Folio, 31,8 cm x 23,2 cm

Description: Attractive and rare 16th century print, published in the workshop Froben, founded by Johannes Froben and taken over by his son Hieronymus after the death of Johannes in 1527. Edited by the Alsace scholar Beatus Rhenanus of Schlettstadt (1485 - 1547). For a detailed discussion, see J. E: Sandys, A history of classical scholarship, New York 1964, pp. 262ff.
Rhenanus' first edition of Tacitus, based on the Aeditio Vulgata' of Beoraldus, printed 1515 in Rome, was printed by Johannes Froben 1519. For the second edition (1533 and 1544), Rhenanus not only thoroughly went through the entire text making corrections, but also used an additional manuscript presented as a gift by Matthias Corvinus, king of Hungary, to his friend Jacob Spiegel.
Besides the text of Tacitus, this folio contains a learned treatise of Rhenanus (Thesaurus locutionum constructionumque vocum Tacito) as well as some notes from the Italian humanist and classical scholar Andrea Alciato (Andreas Alciatus), 1492-1550.
According to our research, the only 1544 print currently offered on the market
