Object: Egyptian wooden statuette

Material: Wood with white gesso, remains of black and red paint.

Period: 12th dynasty of ancient Egypt,
c. 1994 BC to 1785 BC.
Middle Kingdom.

Description:    Wooden figure painted in black and red, shown in upright position. Rivets for the arms and one central rivet at the front still present, the piece was obviously part of a larger assembly. Such statuettes were used in wooden models popular during the Middle Kingdom. They show scenes of daily life and were placed in tombs.

Dimensions: 176mm high.

Condition: Arm missing, other parts of the assembly missing, body itself well preserved. Remains of the original pigmentation. Old sticker from Davies Antiques at the back reading "59B CPJO Middle Kingdom JS". The statuette is mounted on a modern wooden base.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2017 from the private posession of M. Voos, Germany. Inherited by M. Voos from the Germany private collection H. Herbst. Acquired approx. in 1976 at Davies Antiques, London for the Herbst collection and brought to Germany (a copy of the original invoice is available).
