Object: Egyptian fayence statuette of Toth

Material: Dark yellow-greenish fayence.

Period: Late Period,
29th to 30th dynasty,
around 500 BC.

Description:    Toth figurine with human body and head of an ibis standing in a striding pose, a pillar at its back. The god wears a short kilt and a wig. There is a description of this figurine dating to 1983 by Prof. Dr. Wildung, director of the National Collection of Egyptian Art in Munich at the time. His words loosely translate from German to English as follows:

The detailled workmanship of the ibis head, the fully sculptured body and the tense movement of the legs elevate this statuette into the realms of works of highest artistic quality and almost monumental impression. The slender proportions of the figurine and the structure of the upper body imply a dating into the 29th to 30th dynasty. The pale yellow-greenish fayence confirms this dating. There is no doubt about the authenticity of the piece.

Dimensions: 88mm high without base, 110mm high with acrylic base.

Condition: The feet, the base plate and one of the lower legs are missing. A unobstrusive restoration has been made to the beak. Otherwise fully intact. The details including the face are in absolutely perfect condition. A wonderful piece, worthy of being exhibited in a museum. It is mounted with glue to an acrylic stand.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2019 from the German private collection of D. R. Acquired into the collection in 2017 from the Dutch art dealer V. J. Geeling, Archea Ancient Art (we have a copy of the certificate of authenticity). Previoulsy in a German private collection which was built before 1980. There is a letter about this piece from 1983 by Prof. Dr. D. Wildung, at that time managing director at Staatlichen Sammlung Ägyptischer Kunst München (National Collection of Egyptian Art in Munich Germany).
