Description: |
Apulian-corinthian helmet, with broad flat rear flange, the moulded eyebrows extending into a ridge around the crown, decorated with the delineation of the eyeholes and nose-guard, with confronting boars below, floral motifs behind the animals and a chevron band around the perimeter, all highlighted later in white. With two drilling holes to each side to fix a chin strap.

Condition: |
Worth the exhibition in a museum. The helmet is in an excellent condition, professionally restored by Mr. Hermann Born. The restoration report is available as part of Born's 1993 publication, see transcript below (in German): "Der vollständig intakte Helm war alt restauriert, d.h. Abnahme der grünen Korrosionsprodukte bis auf die Kupferoxidschicht. Sämtliche Gravuren waren unsichtbar. Herausarbeiten der feinen Ritzgravuren mit dem Ultraschall-Feinmeißel. Die Notwendigkeit der Freilegung, in diesem Fall stellenweise bis zur metallischen Oberfläche, wird ganz besonders deutlich an den nahezu komplett vorhandenen Ritzverzierungen, selbst noch unter den dicken Kupferoxidschichten. Ausziehen der Gravuren mit reversibler weißer Tusche. Abschlußbehandlung mit stark verdünntem Acryllack und säurefreiem Wachsgemisch." |
