Object number
AR1125-10
Object: bactrian cultic vessel
Material: alabaster
Dimensions: height 85 mm, diameter 48 mm, mould diameter 25 mm, mould depth about 16 mm
Period: late 3rd - early 2nd millenium B. C.
Description: Very nicely veined bactrian alabaster vessel. Columnar shape with central waist. Surface with shallow mold, therein dark incrustations, possibly traces of incense.

The shape of the vessel is very similar to the so-called "bactrian column idols" that are e. g. described in
P. Linenthal, Columns, Discs and the Creation of the World (published online)
V. Sarianidi, Die Kunst des alten Afghanistan (1986)

Up to now, it is widely unknown how and in which context these column idols have been used, a votivic or ritual context have been suggested. Unlike the vessel offered here, the surface of column idols is either flat or shows a deep groove that also extends over the vessel's corpus.
The offered vessel probably also originates from a ritual/cultic context, possibly holding incense.
Condition: Broken in 2 parts in antiquity, professionally restored (restoration hardly visible).
Provenience: Acquired 2010 from W. van Stormbroek, who for a long time held a respected Ancient Art Gallery and closed this down in 2010. The piece was acquired by Mr. Stormbroek from an old Dutch collection.
Authenticity: All our objects are guaranteed to be authentic and come with a lifetime return policy on this matter.
