Object: Painted bowl of the Ica culture

Material: Pottery with polychrome paintings in brown, red-brown, black and white.

Period: Ica culture,
around 1000 AD.

Description:    Wide bowl with round base and steep walls. Brown monochrome painting at the bottom. The top part is separated by a black line. It bears a decoration of black and red-brown lines on white ground.

Dimensions: 115mm diameter, 79mm height.

Condition: Great condition. A stabilized crack accross the side wall. Otherwise fully intact. The original painting is still vibrant, slight chips and wear do not effect the overall impression. Modern inscription "19" by Helene Ferro with black ink on the bottom side, hard to decipher.

Provenance: Acquired in 2018 on the German art market. Previously in the German private collection of Helene Ferro, collection no. 19. Helen Ferro undertook adventurous travels to South America and spent a long time there. She explored the art and culture of the continent and acquired numerous artefacts of the precolumbian civilizations between 1945 and 1967. Before 1968 all objects have been exported from South America to Germany.
