Object: Bronze dagger with double-disc hilt

Material: Bronze.

Period: 1000 BC to 800 BC.
End of Iron Age I or beginning of Iron Age II.

Description:    Dagger of the Amlash culture with a broad, short blade. It is double-edged and tapered at the front. Attached to it is the handle with a double disc at the end, attributing the short sword or dagger to the so-called double-disc hilt type. The blade has a crescent-shaped edge towards the hilt.

Background: The dagger is stylistically a mixture of Luristan bronze weapons and the bronze works of the steppe cultures north of Iran. It is certainly a find from the province of Gilan in northern Iran. The culture that settled there in the Iron Age is named after the burial ground of Amlash.

Dimensions: 38cm long.

Condition: Very good condition. Some ancient or recent damage to the edges, body otherwise fully intact and covered with an attractive green patina, with light green spots of corrosion.

Provenance: Acquired by us on the German art market in 2022. Previously in the German Pladeck family collection. Acquired into the collection in the 1960s or earlier, presumably from the art trade.
