Bronze dagger from North Iran
|
Material: |
Bronze.
|
Period: |
1300 BC to 800 BC. Iron Age I to II. |
Description: |
Dagger from North Iran with a short blade, double-edged and waisted, tapering to a point at the front. The handle is made as a waisted bronze hollow body, in which a grip insert and a pommel could be placed. A straight cross band with three decorative grooves runs between the hilt and blade.
|
Background: |
The dagger is stylistically a mixture of Luristan bronze weapons and the bronze works of the steppe cultures north of Iran. It is probably a find from the province of Gilan in northern Iran. The Amlash culture that settled there in the Iron Age is named after the burial ground of Amlasch.
|
Dimensions: |
25cm long. Once at least 27cm long.
|
Condition: |
The tip and the pommel are missing, otherwise in good condition. Some ancient or recent damage to the edges. Body covered with an attractive green patina.
|
Provenance: |
Acquired by us on the German art market in 2022. Previously in the German Pladeck family collection. Acquired into the collection in the 1960s or earlier, presumably from the art trade.
