Description: |
Cylindrical seal with a central, longitudinal through hole. An animal contest scene is cut onto the outside of the cylinder in a simplified, naturalistic style. It shows a rearing goat, two crossed cattle, two crossed lions and a bull-man. |

36mm length. 18mm diameter. Impressively large for a cylinder seal.

Condition: |
Perfect condition. Only minor chips and wear. The central hole is closed by deposits. A seal impression is not included.

Provenance: |
Acquired by us in 2020 from Dr. I. Bonchev, London. Previously in a British collection, acquired in the 1970ies. A note with an assessment by Professor Lambert came with the seal. Wilfred George Lambert (1926 to 2011), a British archaeologist specialized on Western Asia, was a professor at the University of Birmingham. After his retirement he was active in the ancient near eastern department of the British Museum. |
