Object: Anatolian clay jug with incised decoration

Material: Orange brown clay with dark brown slip. The incisions filled white.

Period: Circa 2500 BC to 2000 BC.
Early to Middle Bronze Age of Anatolia.

Description:    Jug with a pear-shaped body, flattened at the bottom to form a base. A wide and long cylindrical neck on the body, widening outwards at the very top to form a lip. A massive ribbon handle starts slightly below the lip and runs in a flat curve to the shoulder.
The impression is dominated by a rich incised decoration on the outside. Linear patterns run in bands of multiple lines that are at different angles to each other. The neck is framed by a band of two wide lines and one of three wide lines. All lines are filled in white and thus stand out in colour from the background. The decoration technique was popular both in Anatolia's Yortan culture and in Cyprus during Bronze Age. A Cypriot origin is an alternative possibility in this case.

Dimensions: 20cm height. 12cm diameter.

Condition: Stable crack in the neck. Minor chips on the body and larger chips on the lip. Overall very good condition.
