Pair of ancient gold earrings
|
Material: |
Gold. Beads of blue glass.
|
Period: |
1st century AD to 6th century AD, Antiquity to Late Antiquity. |
Description: |
Two gold earrings. Each consists of gold wire bent into a U-shape, one end pointed and the other end bent over. There is an ornament of coiled gold wire in the form of a biconical cylinder. It is set with two blue, also double-conical glass beads. It is an original matching pair. One of the coiled decorative bodies has an interesting encrustation, possibly remains of a former filling. The unusual shape of the earring and the lack of comparable finds do not allow for an exact dating, so give a rather broad range of dates, but tend to date it early in the period mentioned and assume it was created in the eastern Mediterranean region or the Middle East. |
Dimensions: |
Each 34mm long including bracket.
|
Condition: |
Perfectly preserved apart from slight deformations. One "coil" with clear deposits on the outside or possibly from a filling compound that was once inside.
