Object: Bronze Age flanged axe head

Material: Bronze or similar copper alloy.

Period: 950 BC until 800 BC.
Late Bronze Age of Europe.

Description:    The axe head made of solid bronze has an elongated, slender shape. The body becomes broader and thinner towards the cutting edge. It is waisted in the center. Flanges attach on both sides just behind the waist. These are bent inwards and enabled simple shafting of the axe. There is a loop at the side of the neck. Typologically, it is a flanged axe.

Remarks: This type of axe was widespread in Central and Northern Europe. The chronological classification is a prime example of the typological method in archaeology. The Swedish prehistorian Gustaf Oscar Augustin Montelius (1843-1921) published his description of the development of bronze axes in five stages around 1900. For the European Bronze Age, they describe the path from the flat axe to the short flanged axe, palstave and full flanged axe, to the socketed axe. Montelius identified the more stable shafting as the driving force behind the of the development of succeeding types. The typological method is also used in today's archaeological toolkit, but has lost its absolute claim and is now applied in a more differentiated way.
