Object: Core-formed polychrome glass alabastron

Material: Dark blue glass with added red, yellow, turquoise and white.

Period: Around the Middle of the 1st Millennium BC.

Description:    Core-formed glass with colourful decorative bands. The cone-shaped vessel widens slightly towards and closes with a flat bottom. The short neck tapers noticeably and merges into a horizontal lip pointing outwards. Two opposite eyelet handles are melted directly on the lip.
We are very pleased to be able to offer you a specimen from the early days of glass production in classical antiquity. Under the thick patina you can still see the vibrant colors that the vessel once emanated.
While there are numerous comparable pieces for the body shape, the position of the handles is unusual and makes assignment and dating difficult. It is not a classical type of alabastron, but rather a small mystery. The place of manufacture can therefore only be confined to small area but can be anything in the eastern Mediterranean area up to Persia.

Dimensions: 87mm height. 52mm diameter including handles.

Condition: Restored from several fragments, minor chips along the body and a slightly larger chip along the lip. Overall, however, very good condition with strong patina.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2021 from Dr. Eder, Germany. From the estate of the collection of the archaeologist Fritz Fremersdorf (1894 - 1983).
Professor Fremersdorf was the first to systematically devote himself to provincial Roman archaeology in Cologne, starting in 1923. From 1923 to 1959 he was director of today's Romano-Germanic Museum in Cologne. During this time he was also responsible for excavations in the Cologne city area. Professor Fremersdorf significantly expanded the collection of the Romano-Germanic Museum by purchasing several important private collections.
