Period: |
Late Period of Ancient Egypt, 26th to 31st dynasty, 664 BC to 332 BC. |
Description: |
Large statuette of the god Amun as a standing striding figure, cast from bronze. The god is depicted with a typical feather crown and sun disk, and a braided beard of divinity on his chin. Dressed in a short kilt and broad collar, each decorated with fine engravings. The right arm hangs down, the left arm is bent. The hands once held objects that have not survived, probably a scepter was in his left. The bronze statue stands on a rectangular base, the sides of which are inscribed with engraved hieroglyphs. The following can still be read. May Amun give life and health to the Padi-P[...]. The Amun figurine impresses with its fine details and high artistic quality. It is presented on a matching, antique base from the decades around 1900. |
Background: |
The piece is a votive figure. This bronze must have been placed at a temple for Amun in order to ask a favour for the person called Padi-P[...]. Considering the size and quality of this piece, it must have been no small favour to ask. This was common practice in the Late Period. Amun was an exceedingly popular god. Many hoped for his understanding and help. His temples and smaller shrined were found all over Egypt. |
Dimensions: |
The statuette with ancient base, but without the antique base, 17.8cm high, 3.9cm wide, 6.0cm deep. With antique base the piece is 19.6cm high.
|
Condition: |
Great condition. The body of the statuette is almost completely preserved with fine surface details well visible. Missing part and traces of former corrosion on the base. The feather crown is a modern addition and the left forearm has been modernly restored with additions. The surface was gently cleaned and has a fine brown to green patina. The statue can stand alone, but can also be placed loosely on the antique (i.e. modern) base that comes with the piece.
