Glass bead with polychrome decoration
|
Material: |
Glass.
|
Period: |
Around 1000 AD European Middle Ages. Due to a lack of close parallels and reliable dating, the attribution is very vague, potentially several centuries off. |
Description: |
The large glass bead has a spherical body made of opaque, dark blue glass. Yellow lines form a zigzag and rhomboid pattern. There are light blue "eyes" all around the body. The bead has a through hole for threading. Made in Central Europe.
|
Dimensions: |
30mm length. 32mm diameter.
|
Condition: |
Excellent condition for a glass bead of this size. Two clear chips on the body, one modern, the other probably old. There are also small signs of age and use distributed over the body, but these do not detract from the impressive character of the bead.
|
Provenance: |
Acquired by us in 2023 from T. Schloessner, Germany. Previously in the German Steinbock family collection, built between 1920 and 1982 by the art historian R. Steinbock, mostly acquired on the German art market.
