Object: Square bottle of thick glass

Material: Pale green, thick-walled glass.

Period: 9th cent. AD to 12th cent. AD.
Golden Age of Islam.

Description:    The mold-blown small glass flask has a roughly square cross-section. The elongated body is converging into a round neck. Glass ridges circumvent the neck and it is terminating with a round rim. Another large glass ridge sits on the shoulder of the vessel.
Flasks of this type are found along the old trade routes of the Islamic world. They were used for precious liquids, e.g. sented oils.

Dimensions: 6.8cm height, the body with sides of 3.0cm and 2.6cm length.

Condition: Perfect condition. The outer surface cleaned, the inner surface and the neck still show the original find patina.

Provenance: Acquired by us on the US art market in 2022. Previously in the US-American Chanin family collection. Acquired for the collection by Marcy Chanin in 1971 from the Israeli Moshe Dayan Collection. It must be a find from the Near East.
Moshe Dayan was a famous Israeli politician and military leader. Dayan served as Chief of Staff of the Israeli Defense Forces between 1953 and 1958, personally commanded the Israeli forces fighting in the Sinai during the 1956 Suez Crisis and later as Defense Minister.
