Object: Islamic glass lamp

Material: Clear, pale green glass.

Period: 18th to 19th century AD.

Description:    Slender glass cylinder, the lower half slightly tapered, the rim tapering outward to a broad lip. The glass base curves inward like a funnel. Its tube end is surrounded by a glass ring at the base and ends in an irregular breaking edge.
This is a glass lamp from Egypt or the eastern Mediterranean. A very similar piece in the Penn Museum (see below) is of Egyptian origin and comes from a larger lamp arrangement in a mosque.

Dimensions: 19.9cm height. 7.0cm diameter.

Condition: Ancient break on the tube inside the glass, as is common with similar glasses and related to the function and manufacturing. The rest of the glass is in perfect condition. Old Sotheby's sticker from 1992 on the side, as well as remnants of another old sticker.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2022 in the Swiss art trade. Previously in the Swiss collection of Franco and Franca Bernasconi, Lugano. Acquired at Sotheby's London in the 1992 Islamic Art auction.
