Object: Islamic glass vessel with funnel

Material: Clear, pale green glass.

Period: Approx. 9th to 11th century AD.
Golden Age of Islam.

Description:    Slender glass vessel of cylindrical shape, the lower half slightly tapered, the upper edge running outwards to form a wide lip. The bottom of the vessel curves inwards to form a funnel. Its tube end is surrounded by a glass ring at the base and ends in an irregular breaking edge.
It is a glass from the Middle East. The funnel may have been used to separate liquids or to introduce gas.

Dimensions: 19.9cm height. 7.0cm diameter.

Condition: Ancient break on the tube inside the vessel, as is common with similar vessels from the Islamic heyday and probably related to the ancient function. The rest of the vessel is in perfect condition. Old Sotheby's sticker from 1992 on the side, as well as remnants of another old sticker.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2022 in the Swiss art trade. Previously in the Swiss collection of Franco and Franca Bernasconi, Lugano. Acquired at Sotheby's London in the 1992 Islamic Art auction.
