Object: Italic fibula with nice incised decoration

Material: Bronze.

Period: 8th to 5th cent. BC.
Iron Age of Italy.

Description:    Large Italic bronze fibula with incised linear decoration. The brooch body consists of a short arch with a large profile cross-section. The arch tapers into a spiral spring at the fibula head and then transitions into a needle. The foot of the brooch consists of a long, bent catch plate for the needle. It bears an ornamental decoration of engraved lines on one side.
Fibulae of this type are typical of Iron Age Italy. The bow is often described as boat-shaped. A special feature and rarity of this specimen are the three links of a chain that is still hanging on the needle and are certainly originally belonging to the fibula.

Dimensions: 12.5cm long.

Condition: Excellent condition. Except for tiny defects on the catch plate and foot end, the body is completely preserved. Covered with a beautiful green-black patina. Including rest of a chain on the pin.

Provenance: Acquired by us on the British art market in 2021. Previously in a Dutch private collection. Acquired at Bonhams London, "Antiquities" auction of 30 November 2016, lot 44. Consigned from a European private collection. In the 1970ies the fibula was in the posession of Pino Donati of the Swiss art gallery Donati Arte Classica in Lugano.
