2000 BC to 1600 BC. Middle Bronze Age. |
Description: |
Elegant axe head from Luristan. Long blade with a crescent-shaped cutting edge. The neck is rounded. The shaft hole is located near the neck. It is lined with a bulge at the top and ends in a cylinder with elegantly cut rim at the bottom. The basic shape can be seen as a succession to an axe type from the ancient Akkadian Empire. The shape of the shaft hole enabled the axe head to sit securely on the shaft. Although its actual use as a work tool is questionable, a purely ritual function is just as conceivable. |
