Background: The Early Dynastic period is an era of political upheaval in Mesopotamia. Two city-states of the core region, Sumer and Akkad, grew to unimagined size due to rural exodus. For the next century and a half, the Akkadian Empire dominated Mesopotamia and beyond. The era is therefore called the Akkadian period.
