Object: Pair of Roman gold earrings with shield

Description:    Matching pair of gold earrings. Each earring consists of a round shield with a decorative granule on one side and a soldered ring that is connected to the shield on the opposing side via an eyelet and hook. On the ring is a pendant with a sphere made of gold sheet and a volute on the upper eyelet.
This type of earring was widespread in Roman Imperial times, from the provinces north of the Alps through the Balkans to the eastern Mediterranean.

Dimensions: Eyelet with pendant 31mm and 29mm long. The shield is approximately 7mm in diameter. Both earrings together weigh approximately 2g.

Condition: One earring in perfect condition. The other earring with a dented sheet gold sphere.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2023 on the German art market. Previously in the German family collection K. J. Mueller. Acquired between 1950 and 1977, presumably from the art market.
