Description: |
Matching pair of gold earrings. Each earring consists of a semi-spherical shield with two decorative granules. A ring is soldered on one side and connected to the shield on the other side via an eyelet and a hook. Attached is a pendant with a volute on the upper eyelet and a cylindrical glass bead at the lower end, the glass coloured green or blue respectively. This type of earring was widespread in Roman Imperial times, from the provinces north of the Alps through the Balkans to the eastern Mediterranean. |

Eyelet with pendant 30mm and 28mm long. The shield is approximately 10mm in diameter. Both earrings together weigh approximately 1.5g.

Acquired by us in 2023 on the German art market. Previously in the German family collection K. J. Mueller. Acquired between 1950 and 1977, presumably from the art market.
