Object: Late Roman glass bottle with handles

Material: Pale violet and green glass.

Period: 4th century AD.
Late Roman Imperial period.

Description:    Large Roman glass bottle with a finely ribbed, almost spherical body made of pale violet colored glass. The base is flattened and allows the vessel to stand on its own. A long neck is attached at the top, with a constriction at the base and a funnel-like lip pointing outwards. Under the lip is a wavy decorative thread made of green glass. From there, two ribbon handles made of green glass run vertically in a high arch to the shoulder on opposing sides.
The glass impresses with its size and elegant shape. The body was free-blown, the decorative thread and the handles were applied in a second production step. Made in one of the Roman glass factories in the eastern Mediterranean.

Dimensions: 18.1cm high. 12.1cm diameter without handles, 12.9cm diameter with handles.

Condition: Great condition. All original material, body intact. The two handles broken and reattached. Exterior is cleaned with well preserved areas of iridescent patina. Some remaining find deposits on the interior. Two stickers on the bottom reading "2,800" and "192".
