Object: Small Roman glass bowl

Material: Pale turquoise, transparent glass.

Period: Around the 2nd century AD.
Roman Imperial period.

Description:    Small bowl made of glass. The body tapers to a base ring at the bottom. The vessel's wall is slightly tapered under the rimless lip.

Dimensions: 9.5cm diameter. 7.0cm height.

Condition: Very good condition. All original material is present, with a long crack in the wall stabilized with glue. Solid white encrustations on the surface. Two modern stickers with the inscription "15 SHR" and "13" on the bottom. The 13 is the numbering of the Heckmann collection.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2023 from the German Heckmann family collection. The founder Peter Heckmann acquired the glass collection in the 1970s on the German art market. A sister piece of identical manufacture, our object number AR3490-14, was purchased on 5 May 1974 from the antiquities dealer Albrecht Neuhaus in Wuerzburg, Germany, and is said to come from Asia Minor. The glass described here was not purchased in the same batch, but it was probably purchased at a different time around 1974 from antiquities dealer Neuhaus.
