Object: Pair of Roman gold earrings

Material: Gold. Beads made of faience.

Period: 1st century AD to 3rd century AD.
Roman Imperial period.

Description:    Two earrings made of gold. Each consists of a circularly bent gold wire, one end designed as an eyelet and the other wound around it. A convex round shield is soldered near the eyelet. There is also a pendant on the gold wire. It is made of turquoise-blue faience in the shape of a cone with longitudinal grooves and an eyelet at the end.
The size of the pendants is slightly different, but the earrings probably belong together as a pair originally. The earrings were certainly manufactured in the eastern Mediterranean region, possibly in Roman Egypt.

Condition: Perfect condition. Including the original faience pendants.

Provenance: Acquired by us on the art market in 2022. Previously in the French private collection Levy. Acquired into the collection in 1982.
