Pair of Roman gold earrings
|
Material: |
Gold.
|
Period: |
1st cent. AD to 2nd cent. AD, Roman Imperial period. |
Description: |
Two gold wire earrings. Each consists of an S-shaped wire with long ends. One end is wrapped around the center of the S-shape. Towards this end, the wire first widens and then changes back to the original diameter. At this point there is a rosette-shaped decorative ring. It is possible that beads once decorated this part of the earring. The other end closes with a ball. An additional piece of gold wire with eyelets at the ends connects one bow of the overall S-shape. It is a matched couple. The earrings could be hung with the ball end of the wire. Their style points to an origin in the eastern Mediterranean. |
Dimensions: |
27mm x 15mm and 28mm x 14mm, respectively.
|
Condition: |
Perfect condition. It is possible that beads were once threaded onto the gold wire between the rosette and the spiral winding.
|
