Object: Sword from the Hallstatt period

Material: Bronze.

Period: Circa 800 BC to 620 BC.
Hallstatt period, Ha C,
Early European Iron Age.

Description:    Bronze sword with straight blade, slowly tapering towards the tip. The blade transitions into a broadening and then a hilt. There are five holes for rivets at the hilt including one at the end. With them a grip insert could be held in place.
The sword is a so-called Griffzungenschwert and comes from Central Europe. Comparable finds are known from southern Germany, see museum references below. During the Hallstatt period, bronze swords were gradually replaced by iron swords. The present example therefore represents the pinnacle of bronze weapons technology.

Dimensions: 70.2cm long, 5.6cm wide.

Condition: Broken in the middle, the two parts were put back together in a modern times and fixed with metal plates riveted on both sides. Chipped and missing parts at the end of the handle and at the tip of the blade. The blade is in very good condition, with inconspicuous small dents that may indicate aging or ancient use. On one side there is the inscription "2" in white by a previous owner. The surface has been gently cleaned and impresses with a beautiful patina in shades of green. Overall an impressive piece and in great condition. The honest and striking restoration does not disturb this impression.

Provenance: Acquired by us on the German art market in 2023. Before in a German private collection. Added to the collection in 2021 from an older German private collection. Acquired in 1988 in Germany at Honhardt Castle from Juergen H. Fricker, publicly appointed and sworn expert on historical weapons.
