Object:       Amphoriskos

Material: Yellow clay with traces of red slip, likely floral motifs.

Date: About 4th - 1st century B.C.
Probably Hellenistic.

Description:    Cylindrical vessel, small pointed foot. Steep shoulder, high thin neck, conical mouth, two attached flat handles.

Size: Height 270mm with and 230mm without base, diameter about 95mm.

Condition: Lower part of foot broken and missing, otherwise complete and perfectly preserved, incl. traces of the original red painting. Mounted on a modern marble base with a metal pin.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2021 from the German private collection Dr. Dietrich who acquired the object in 1962 from Prof Dr Jochen Bleicken, Ordinarius for Ancient History at the University of Goettingen.
