Object: Cone-shaped stamp seal with star of Ishtar

Material: Opaque whitish yellow stone, possibly chalcedony.

Period: 7th cent. BC to 6th cent. BC.
Neo-Assyrian or Neo-Babylonian.

Description:    Cone-shaped stamp seal with a drill hole at the upper side to string the piece. The stamp shows a schematic tree of life, above it are a rhomb and an eight-pointed star. The star is the symbol of goddess Ishtar, also known as Inanna.

Dimensions: 20mm height, 10mm diameter.

Condition: Perfect preservation apart from minor chips around the drill hole.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2014 from a German auction house. Previously in the important collection of the notary Dr. Paul Gerhard Langenkamp (1922–2012) from Duesseldorf, Germany. Acquired into his collection from the European art market between the 1940s and 1980s. Many pieces from his collection has been bought at the art specialists Drouot Paris, Palais d’Orsay, Münzen und Medaillen AG Basel and Frank Sternberg AG Zürich.
