Object: Dagger from the Northern European Bronze Age

Material: Bronze.

Period: 2nd Millennium BC.
Bronze Age of Northern Europe.

Description:    Blade of a dagger or short sword. The double edged blade is tapering to the front and ends in a rounded tip. The rear end is equipped with two lines of 8 holes in total that were used to mount the leaf to the handle. The handle must have been made of perishable materials, e.g. wood or bone. It did not survive the ages.

Dimensions: 29.1cm long. 2.8cm wide.

Condition: Near perfect condition. Fully intact, only one hole at the rear end ripped open, possibly an ancient damage. The cutting edges have small dents. Nicely cleaned surface with light patina.

Provenance: Acquired by us in 2022 in the British art market. The piece was already previously with art dealers and was sold by British based Helios Gallery. We have a copy of the Helios certificate of authenticity. Previously in a British private collection from Liverpool. Acquired into the collection in the late 19th century.
