Object: Daunian Oinochoe

Material: Pale clay with red and black slip

Date: Ca. 4th century B.C.

Description:    Voluminous jug with small foot and flat-concave handle. Short neck opening into a vertical lipless mouth.
Broad band of red-black slip on the body, framed by a thin band above and below. Mouth with two bands inside, another slip band on the outside of the handle.

Size: Height 123 mm, diameter 125 mm

Condition: Restored from several fragments, small chips at neck, foot and body. The original painting is mainly preserved. Overall good condition for a vessel of this size. Collector's sticker "42/98" on bottom.

Provenance: Acquired 2021 from Mr. M.B., Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, who acquired the oinochoe and other objects from the collection of M.T., Bergisch Gladbach, Germany. Inherited from his parents who acquired the object in Germany in the 1960s. A note from the antiquities dealer Dr. Kurt Deppert, "Kunstwerke der Antike", Frankfurt am Main, dated February 08, 1968, sets the terminus ante quem the object was acquired into the collection T. Dr. Deppert was requested by the family T. to provide a short assessment of the collection, which he did along with a detailed description of all objects.
